The chosen Charity for 2009/10
is
Guide Dogs
Dear members
As your new Charity Co-ordinator, I am pleased to be involved with this years charity, guide dogs for the year 2009/10.
I hope that we, as a Centre, can raise a very wealthy sum of money to help make a difference in some way as a guide dog can make a big difference to someone’s life.
As well as our normal fund raising events I would like to ask if anyone has old ink cartridges and old mobile phones, if you could let me have them or any Committee Member. This is a very good source of income for the charity. This years money that we raise is to go to the newly formed local Beverley branch so we will be able to see it used in our area.
Guide dogs have been providing blind and partially-sighted people with the freedom and independence a guide dog gives for over 75 years.
Guide dogs is committed to helping blind and visually impaired people lead more independent lives, not only by training guide dogs but also by providing rehabilitation and  mobility training. Guide dogs are also working with a number of schools and community groups in this area and across the UK to raise awareness and to educate young and old about the importance of eye care.
This work goes hand in hand with our investment in ophthalmic research to help find a cure for some of the most common causes of sight loss.
The Charity is supported by over 10,000 volunteers, including puppy walkers, brood – stock holders, dog boarders and thousands of local fundraisers.
It costs £10 a day to support a working guide dog partnership and with 130 guide dog partnerships in the York, Selby and Humber region you will appreciate just how much we need to raise to support our vital services. As Guide Dogs receive no government funding our services are entirely
Every penny donated helps us achieve our vision of a world in which all blind and partially sighted people enjoy the same rights, opportunities and responsibilities as everyone else. To help us honour our lifetime commitment to guide dog owners, we keep a sum equivalent to two years costs of running the core guide dog service.
Many thanks
Graham
